Year 8 into Year 9

As a future year 9 student at MBC you will have an exciting and varied timetable of different subjects. Unlike your current school, at MBC you will have a range of different courses that you will study. These will be with different teachers and in different parts of the school. The courses are designed to teach you the skills you will need when you move onto NCEA later in the school. They also should excite and inspire you.

Our Year 9 Junior curriculum programme is based on the eight learning areas of the New Zealand Curriculum:

  • English
  • Mathematics and Statistics
  • Science
  • Social Science
  • Physical Education and Health
  • Arts
  • Languages
  • Technology

1. English, Mathematics and Statistics, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education and Health form the core of the Year 9 programme and you will study         all of these as either full, or half-year courses. There is also a one term course of Māori. These will be selected for you.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) is offered as a full-year optional course, replacing English.

2. You must then choose either the social science and CDV option (they run together) or the Te Reo Māori option.

(Teo Reo Māori is offered as a three-term optional course - this would replace Social Studies)

Once you have done this, you will be able to make your remaining option.

3. Arts and Technology courses are taught as one-term courses where you have a choice of:

  • Art
  • Drama
  • Music
  • Design & Graphics
  • Digital Technology
  • Food Technology
  • Woodwork

You will choose and study up to five of these courses.

You do need to make a back up course choice before finishing.
