NCEA L3 Mathematics - general B
Course Description
Teacher in Charge: Mr R. Thornley
This NCEA L3 (curriculum level 8) general Mathematics course covers;
Critical paths (internal 2 credits, take-home assignment completed over one week in own time).
Using critical path analysis in solving problems involves: selecting and using methods, demonstrating knowledge of concepts and terms and communicating using appropriate representations.
Time series (internal 4 credits, take-home assignment completed over two weeks in own time).
Using the statistical enquiry cycle to investigate time series data involves: using existing data sets, selecting a variable to investigate, selecting and using appropriate display(s), identifying features in the data and relating this to the context, finding an appropriate model, using the model to make a forecast and communicating findings in a conclusion.
Bivariate data (internal 4 credits, take-home assignment completed over two weeks in own time).
Using the statistical enquiry cycle to investigate bivariate measurement data involves: posing an appropriate relationship question using a given multivariate data set, selecting and using appropriate displays, identifying features in data, finding an appropriate model, describing the nature and strength of the relationship and relating this to the context, using the model to make a prediction and communicating findings in a conclusion.
Can be taken independently or combined with either MAT3A for a full-year course in UE Mathematics (not endorsable) or MAC3A for a full-year course in UE Mathematics (endorsable).

Recommended Prior Learning
Students require a minimum of 10 Mathematics credits at NCEA L2 including an attempt at the external assessment. A high level of literacy and computer competence is required for the two report-based assessments.
In order to achieve success at NCEA L3 (curriculum level 8) students need to be present for more than 85% of classes, actively engaged during every lesson and complete between two and three hours of independent study every week.
Contributions and Equipment/Stationery
Pens (blue, black and red)
Ruler
1J5 5mm quad book (about three for the year)
Scientific calculator
A Graphics calculator is beneficial but not compulsory.
A laptop for parts of the course, MBC can provide a day loan if necessary.
A textbook will be issued to the student for the year. It is the student's responsibility and must be returned in good condition at the end of the year.
Additional resources are available for an additional charge, these are not compulsory.
Students are to bring all equipment to every lesson.
Pathway
The following pathways are available:
MAT3A + MAT3B = NCEA L3 Mathematics (UE Mathematics, not endorsable).
MAC3A + MAT3B = NCEA L3 Mathematics (UE Mathematics, endorsable), business pathway.
