Staff should take the following steps if students are in class;
•Secure and lock all external doors and corridor entrances if possible and, if possible, barricade them to make them secure.
•Turn out the lights, drawing shades, blinds, or curtains if available to cover the windows.
•Seat students on the floor and keep students out of sight. Take students to a place in the room with the least visibility and away from your door or windows.
•Students should remain silent – so as not to attract attention.
•Stay in the lockdown position until an “all clear” announcement is made.
•Do not, under any circumstances, let students out into the corridor’
•Staff should make a list/take the roll of those students in their secured area.
•Admit any “stray” students into class if students appear to have no room or are wandering.
•Use mobile phones or computers to send and receive messages if possible.
•Ensure that students do not use their phones/devices for any unauthorised outside communication
•Await for instructions from senior colleagues or police.
Procedures if students are not in class:
•If students are in the corridor or toilet and it would be unsafe to go to any designated room, they should move inside the nearest safe room.
•If a lockdown alert is sounded during morning interval or lunchtime students and teachers need to go to their room if possible. If this is not possible then students will need to go to the nearest room, preferably with a staff member and remain there until clear.
Procedures if classes are offsite:

Any students and staff who are out of school on an activity will be contacted and told not to go to school until further notice.

The all-clear announcement
• Announcement over the PA system to inform Staff and Students that Lockdown is over once a member of the SLT and Police come around to release you from your room. Teachers will move students to 1) Courts or 2) Gym – If it is raining and it is late in the evening Students are to be seated in their Whānau groups and released on arrival of their parents. MBC will organise with the Bus Company transport to get students safely home.
