NCEA L1 Employment Skills

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr J. Bell.

A course to provide readiness for employment and is aimed at students who are likely to enter the local work force. All students complete Core Skills Unit Standards at Level 1. The program has been designed around enabling students to make an easy transition from school to the workforce. Students can select this subject but preference will be given to students who have been recommended by their Dean.

Course Overview

Term 1
Students start the Year with an introductory health and safety standard then they look at employee/employer rights, obligations and responsibilities. Local worksite visits will also take place to allow students to further explore the options available to them as they begin to plan their career pathway.

Term 2
Students look at how to research relevant information and then how to budget so they can manage their own finances.

Term 3
Term three students look at managing their own health followed by a drugs and alcohol standard which gives them information about harmful substances, how they affect people physically, emotionally and psychologically. Students will also do a standard on starting work. Again, local worksite visits will also take place to allow students to further explore the options available to them as they begin to plan their career pathway.

Term 4
Term 4 students will be gaining knowledge on how to become more employable. There is also scope for those who have worked at a faster pace to gain more credits at NCEA Level 2.
