ESLSA

Senior English for Speakers of Other Languages A

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mrs R. Quigley

Senior ESOL Semester A This course is for students at an Intermediate/Upper Intermediate/Advanced level of English. Students will study grammar, reading, writing, listening and speaking in English with a focus on a variety of familiar topics and contexts. Assessments are offered at NCEA level 2 and 3, so that learners can be assessed at the appropriate level for their English. Semester A focuses on assessing the skills of Speaking and Reading. 10 credits are offered at either level 2 or 3 for students in this course.

The ESOL programme provides English language learning through three classes taught at different levels. ESOL classes focus on the four language learning areas of Speaking, Reading, Writing and Listening.

Students learn the grammar of the English language and develop their language skills in authentic learning contexts.

All three classes provide opportunities to gain credits through assessments at NCEA levels 1 (901), 2 (902) and 3 (903).

Additional ESOL learning is available in the ELRC tutor groups, where students with high ESOL needs can receive extra English language support.

Assessments are run on a two-year cycle, so students can remain in the same ESOL level for two years if required.
