NCEA L2 Forestry A

Course Description

In this course you will learn the requirements for safe work practices as well as an outline of the forest industry in New Zealand. There are rules regarding working in forestry and you will become familiar with them.

You will also learn about the importance of the physical well being of primary industry workers.

Chainsaws are a vital tool for foresters. You will learn how to use them safely.

Finally, you will leave the course knowing how commercial forestry works.


Course Overview

Semester A
Students will look at the hydration, nutrition and sleep requirements for well-being of a Primary Industry worker. This includes looking at what drinks are good for hydration such as water, and those that are not- energy drinks. Students must be able to put together optimal meals for a day, including carbohydrates, protein, fruits and vegetables and vitamins and minerals.
They will also look at the general health, safety and environmental requirements in Forestry, becoming familiar with the Approved Code of Practice for Forestry in New Zealand and including operating a chainsaw safely.
U.S. 31656 will be completed over the full year course. The students will record details of their safe work practices such as wearing the correct PPE gear and using a radio.

Recommended Prior Learning

We recommend that you achieve 14 credits in Science at Level 1, or higher. However, if you have an interest in Forestry and a willingness for physical work we will consider you.

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

Students will require a 1B5 book.

Assessment Information

U.S. 31656 will be completed over the full-year course. Students who opt into one semester only may not be able to complete this assessment.
