In this course, you will gain knowledge and skills essential for working in New Zealand's Forestry Industry. The course will cover:
Safe Work Practices: You will learn the requirements for safe work practices, using the Approved Code of Practice for Forestry. This includes familiarizing yourself with the rules and regulations specific to the forestry sector.
Commercial Forestry Operations: Students will learn how commercial forestry works, including the processes involved from planting to harvesting and processing into the final product.
Chainsaw Safety: Chainsaws are vital tools for foresters. You will receive hands-on training on how to use them safely and effectively, adhering to best practices and safety guidelines.
This course is designed to provide you with the practical skills and theoretical knowledge needed to work in New Zealand's forestry industry, ensuring you are well-prepared for a career in this field.
Term 1
US 22997- Students will begin the year by looking at the production cycle of Commercial Forestry. This includes defining common forestry terms, key species, the management cycles of plantation trees, job prescriptions and quality control. This gives the students a good overview of the management practices that are carried out in the forestry industry to understand how to grow a quality tree.
U.S. 31656 will be completed over the full-year course. The students will record details of their safe work practices such as wearing the correct PPE gear, using a radio, and making upward and downward cuts.
Term 2
US 17769 -They will look at the general health, safety and environmental requirements in Forestry, becoming familiar with the Approved Code of Practice for Forestry in New Zealand and including operating a chainsaw safely.
US6916 - Students will become familiar with the chainsaws- recognise safety features, identify parts and sharpen the saw. This provides the students with knowledge of the rules of chainsaw safety.
Term 3
US6917 - Students will begin to use the chainsaws. The students are trained to handle basic chainsaw operations effectively, ensuring safety protocols are met, maintaining the chainsaw and chain, and learning operational techniques. Students will be required to keep diary entries to provide evidence they have met requirements.

US 19145- Students will learn about the importance of adequate hydration, balanced nutrition, and sufficient sleep in sustaining energy levels, enhancing performance, and promoting overall health and safety in primary industry roles, with an emphasis on forestry roles.
