Course Description

Recommended Prior Learning

It is recommended that students have taken our Year 11 Physical Education (PED100) course, but not required.


This course will suit those interested in pursuing an interest or career in sport and recreation. It has a strong academic focus along with a variety of practical work.

Skill Learning - What does it take to learn a new skill? 

Social responsibility - How do you get the best out of your Team?

Risk management - How to manage risk in the outdoors? What are the Health and Safety requirements?

Practical (Kayak Roll, Badminton, Badminton, Snow sport, Fitness training, Lawn Bowls )

Kayak camp - In Murchison on the Buller river. 

Kayak roll - Learn to roll a kayak.

Biomechanics - analyzing our movements using video. From there we investigate ways we can be more effective during exercise and sports movement

Exercise Physiology - looking at body's responses to physical activity. How the body adapts to physical activity over time? How can we train in the most effective way?

Coaching - leadership unit where we look at different types of leadership and apply them to coaching at St Marys



Course Overview

Term 1
As 2.7 Risk Assessment through Kayaking
Risk management - How to manage risk in the outdoors? What are the Health and Safety requirements?
Kayak camp - In Murchison on the Buller River.
Kayak roll - Learn to roll a kayak.

As 2.8 Social Responsibility (unit goes for the whole year)
How do you get the best out of your Team? What part can you play in a team?

Term 2
As 2.6 Leadership unit
What is a leader? What do good leaders do and why? Organizational skills, building teams and reflecting
Coaching - leadership unit where we look at different types of leadership and apply them to coaching at St Marys

As 2.2 Anatomy and Biomechanics
How do muscles and bones work together to create movement?
Analyzing our movements using video. From there we investigate ways we can be more effective during exercise and sports movement

Term 3
As 2.3 Fitness training exercise physiology
How does our body response to physical activity? How the body adapt to physical activity over time? How can we train in the most effective way?

Term 4
-Finishing off written work and then recreation lessons
