Agriculture and Horticulture

A course suited to those interested in pursuing a career in  Agriculture/Horticulture. It contains both Achievement Standards and Unit Standards so we can cater the course for an academic or workplace pathway.

The course includes

Environmental Impacts of Primary Production

Management Practices and how they affect animal behaviours

Safe Operation of a Tractor, Quadbike and Motorbike

Sowing and monitoring seeds

Course Overview

Term 1
US 29508 - Sow and monitor seeds require students to grow 4 different seeds in at least 2 different media. It requires students to sow and monitor the seeds until the seedlings have true leaves. Students are expected to provide photographic evidence and will link their learning to nurseries and how they operate.

US 19044 - Safe Operation of a Tractor- this Unit Standard looks at the legal requirements of tractors and how to use them safely. Students will learn about the hazards associated with tractor use and how they are minimised, isolated or eliminated.

Term 2
AS 91298 - Environmental Impacts of Primary Production- this Achievement Standard looks at the effects primary industries can have on the soil/land, water/seas, air and living organisms. Students will choose a primary industry and explain how that industry affects the environment. They will discuss the changes industries have made to improve their environmental impact as well as the negative effects that can occur with poor management.

US 24555 - Safe Operation of a Motorbike- this Unit Standard looks at the legal requirements of motorbikes and how to use them safely. Students will learn about the hazards associated with motorbike use and how they are minimised, isolated or eliminated.

Term 3
AS 91295 - Animal Behaviour and Management Practices- This Achievement Standard looks at the role of a stockperson and how they can influence animal behaviours. Many behaviours are innate in animals so the students will learn how we recognise these behaviours and modify our tasks to reduce the stress on livestock to improve the quality, quantity or timing of the product.

US 24557 - Safe Operation of a Quadbike- This unit Standard looks at the legal requirements of quadbikes and how to use them safely. Students will learn about the hazards associated with quadbike use and how they are minimised, isolated or eliminated.
