NCEA L1 Materials Technology

Course Description

Materials and Processing Technology is a hands-on, creative subject that encourages students to explore the technology curriculum through the design and creation of an outcome that is fit-for-purpose. 

Ākonga who study Materials and Processing Technology will develop knowledge about materials, techniques, and processes which are intrinsic to their application and use. They will learn to plan projects and develop specifications through design concepts and the use of briefs. They will create outcomes that address a need or opportunity.

Students will cultivate life-long practical skills and learn to incorporate collaboration into their technological practice. They will also develop an understanding of sustainable practices through research and application.

Technology is a subject that uses the knowledge that you have gained from other subject areas and applies that knowledge to solve a problem or a need. You may see an opportunity in the world around you and feel that you could invent something to fill that opportunity. Technology at Level 1 gives you the training to do this. 

Practical and thinking skills are required. A variety of different materials are available for you to design your end product or final outcome.

Technology can lead to so many different career pathways. Whether you want to be an Engineer, an Architect, a Tradesman, a Scientist or a Designer, Technology is a great subject to study.

It uses the Technology Design Process of thinking through initial designs and then developing these ideas, by consulting with your clients, to produce the final outcome/practical solution. It is the subject of invention.

Course Overview

Term 1
You will start off with a teacher-given project. This project will give you the opportunity to use a range of different materials and processes.
The aim is for you to become familiar with all the equipment, within the Technology area that you could potentially use for your own project outcome in Term 2 and Term 3. From 2024 Level 1 Materials and Processing Technology will be assessed using the new standards. More information will be available later in the year. Term 1 will see students using AS 92015 Demonstrate understanding of materials and techniques for a feasible Materials and Processing Technology outcome (4 Credits - External)

Term 2
Term 2 will see students using AS 92012 Develop a Materials and Processing Technology outcome for an authentic context ( 6 Credits - Internal). You will be tasked with designing and then making a working prototype for an authentic context. You will be able to chose relevant and appropriate materials and equipment having gained knowledge during in Term 1. The importance of choosing the right materials and equipment for the job at hand will also be
covered. You will be following the Technological Design Process.

Term 3
AS 92013 Develop a Materials and Processing Technology outcome by transforming, manipulating, or combining different materials (6 Credits - Internal) will be completed in Term 3.

Term 4
In this term you will be tidying up and completing the External achievement standard 92014 Demonstrate understanding of sustainable practices in the development of a Materials and Processing Technology design (4 Credits - External)

An open mind, an inventive mind,  enthusiasm and work ethic that enables you to look for the relevant knowledge that will help you solve a problem or invent a solution.

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

A3 clearfile portfolio would be useful. It is not compulsory but definitely recommended.

Pathway

The design process is very similar in both Graphics and Materials Technology. So, it is good to take both but, if this is not feasible, then they can be interchanged as you progress through to Levels 2 and 3.
