NCEA L3 English - One eye open

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Ms J. McLeod.

English - One Eye Open

Are you blind to the truth?

Have we really thought it through?

Whichever text you choose, the focus is on critical evaluation - namely, identifying and understanding the 'why' element.

This full year course develops critical thinking and communication skills around a range of written texts. Students will complete internal and external achievement assessments  developed around these texts, so this course ideally suits confident readers.  The course focuses on both providing students with the opportunity to gain NCEA Level 3 credits, but also further developing core language skills required at both university and in the workplace.  Students will engage in a research project through a literary lens, make connections between texts, close view a film, write in a variety of different genres, and showcase critical evaluation skills through an external essay.

Student choice is encouraged where practical, and part of the development of critical thinking skills is to enable students to connect their own world view about the material we engage in and with.

Course Overview

Term 1
The first written text is selected which forms the basis for our Information Literacy Internal Assessment. We also write a book review as the first piece for our writing portfolio.

Term 2
The second written text is given out and this can be used for the Connections Internal Assessment. We write an opinion piece for our writing portfolio and close view a film through an auteur lens.

Term 3
This term we complete a written text study culminating in an essay which goes in our writing portfolio. We write creatively for our last piece in our portfolio and then the best two pieces are chosen for submission and re-crafted.

Term 4
This term we focus solely on the external assessment and spend time discussing and disseminating our chosen text to ensure we understand author's purpose and a connection to the wider world.
