NCEA L1 Furniture Making

Course Description

This course is aimed at developing fine woodworking skills through the production of a number of projects. The focus of the course is hands-on and practical and is based around hand tools. Fixed machines and portable hand tools will be used as and when appropriate.

The course will consist of developing the design principles of aesthetics and function, woodworking skills, joinery and furniture construction. 


Course Overview

Term 1
You will learn about safety and how to behave in a workshop environment where there are numerous risks involved that don’t exist in a classroom. Personal protective equipment (PPE) is provided.
Work begins with hand tools; you will learn about the materials that you are using as well as the patience, respect and attention to detail it takes to work with wood.

Student voice is collected about a project that will become the focus of the course for the rest of the course. This may be a side table, coffee table, chair, stool, bench, desk, etc. The focus is to build a sturdy piece of furniture that is functional, while style depends entirely on each individual student. Power tools and proper processes are introduced in this section and will allow you to move forward with their projects efficiently and effectively.
Due to the hands-on nature of this course, the students are expected to display a high level of personal responsibility at all times. Unsafe practice won’t be tolerated.


Term 2
You will carry on with your project . Throughout the construction, you will be studying for all the relevant Unit Standards that apply to this course.

Term 3
Throughout the construction, you will be studying for all the relevant Unit Standards that apply to this course. Your skills will continue to be refined and you must maintain high standards of construction.
Finish, and the willingness to achieve accuracy in your work is paramount. You need to achieve to your full potential.

Term 4
Should you finish your project ahead of time, you will then be tasked with additional work to extend your skills.

Recommended Prior Learning

Although it would be preferable if you had taken either Wood, Technology or Engineering workshops at Yrs 9 and 10, this is an open entry course.

All that is required is a good working ethic so that you can gain all the skills offered and reach your full potential.
