NCEA L1 Visual Arts

Course Description

ART1 - Level 1 Visual Arts is a full year course. Students will develop a wide range of skills in drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, design and sculpture. Digital art opportunities work alongside the traditional paper based artworks. (A.S.90915) 

There are 5 achievement standards with a total of 30 credits available.

Students are encouraged to draw from their environment and make artworks in various media. (A.S.90914) Additionally, a research project with L1 Literacy credits attached, may be completed (A.S.90913)                 All work completed leads toward the 12 credit folio.

Another standard is available in Term 4 further internal standard completes the year.(A.S.90917)             Further extension of skills in photography, painting and design are encouraged towards Levels 2 and 3 courses.

Course Overview

Term 1
Introduction to the course includes the development of skills in drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture. Students are encouraged to draw from their environment and make artworks in various media. (A.S.90914) Additionally, a research project with L1 Literacy credits attached, may be completed (A.S.90913) All developing skills lead towards the 12 credit folio.

Term 2
Exploration of artmaking skills continues with the addition of photography and design tasks. Students are supported to develop ideas around which their personal project will develop. (A.S.90915)

Term 3
By Term 3, production of artworks for the folio continue. Individualized tasks allow each student to develop their own style within their area of interest. Artwork towards the 12 credit folio concludes at the end of Term 3. (A.S.90916) This is submitted for marking in Term 4.

Term 4
A further internal standard completes the year.(A.S.90917)
Further extension of skills in photography, painting and design are encouraged towards Levels 2 and 3 courses.

Recommended Prior Learning

Some experiences of Art at Year 9 or 10 would be an advantage. The key thing is to have a willingness to learn, to work hard and to try your best. Everything else can be taught.


Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

Contribution to the take-home component costs is expected.

Pathway

At levels 2 & 3, students may choose to take more than one Visual Arts subject: Painting, Design, Photography.
