Year 10 Engineering Workshop Skills
Course Description
The aim of this one-term course is to engage you in Metal Technology. It acts as a foundation for Yr11and NCEA Level 1 Engineering and/or Materials Technology. There are 3 projects and you will use a variety of different techniques to make them.
This course will give you the opportunity to work with metal for the production of your technological outcomes (spinning top, bottle opener, and pencil box). You will learn how a selection of metals can be shaped, formed, joined, and finished to produce items of high quality.
You are required to work hard and make the most of being in the workshop. At the end of the term, you will be able to decide whether you are keen to pursue some of the new skills that you have learned this year. 
Course Overview
Term 1
H&S in the workshop and then start with the sheet metal pencil box.
* How to read plans.
* Introduction to the folder and guillotine.
* Materials awareness:
What is ‘coloured steel’?
Is it the best material for the job?
* Introduction to pop riveting.
Term 2
Bottle opener:
• Marking out using ‘Engineers blue’.
• Materials awareness:
Understanding the problems associated with drilling stainless steel.
Spinning top:
• Introduction to centre lathe work.
• Quality of finish.
• Codes of practice:
H&S
• Materials awareness:
Why are you using brass?
What are its characteristics and properties?
Recommended Prior Learning
Just an open mind, good work ethic and an enthusiasm for the subject.
Contributions and Equipment/Stationery
A4 clearfile folder, pencil and pen.
