Lights, Camera, Action!

This course is designed to have a particular focus on visual and verbal modes of communication. This would suit students who like to learn through discussion and physical movement. Whether you see yourself as future company leader, actor, presenter, screen-writer, politician or artist, you will have the opportunity to develop the skills that will help you succeed. Whilst still developing core English skills, this course is for those who are willing to put themselves out of their comfort zone to find their creative voice.

English as a subject area focuses on the two key strands – making meaning and creating meaning. We focus on communication through a range of texts and mediums to reflect societal changes and 21st Century learning foci. English encompasses learning the language, using the language and thinking beyond the language through authentic learning contexts.

Specifically, this involves learners being willing to have their ideas challenged; to developing their own ideas and opinions through critical literacy and working on the skills required to be confident using their own personal voice.


Course Overview

Term 1
We will begin by unpacking film techniques and looking closely at how they combine to support the main ideas of a scene. Then we will look at the detail of the acting performance and take note of what makes an effective performance. This will inform our criteria and goals for our speech assessment. The speech may take the form of a drama performance, presentation, podcast or a traditional persuasive style.

Close Viewing and Speech

Term 2
Students will develop their understanding of visual language and how it is used to manipulate and inform the reader. Students will then put their learning into practice by creating a meaningful and creative visual piece. They may choose to link this visual piece to their writing, speech or close-viewing topic. In the second half of the term, they will have a choice of writing either a script, story or a film review depending on their personal interests. They will need to be well versed in language features to add flair to their own writing style which will also help lead them into next term’s focus.

Term 3
This term is focused on the external content. The class will undertake a film study as well as continuing with the Unfamiliar Text study. Students will be learning how writer’s use language to influence, inform and at times, manipulate the reader.

Unfamiliar texts: Deconstructing a range of different text types looking at purpose and ideas.

Term 4
Revise, revise, revise.
