NCEA L1 English - Divide and Conquer
Teacher in Charge: Ms J. McLeod
Divide and conquer -
This course will explore humanity’s desire to conquer and rule over others. Are we then merely puppets controlled by the powerful elite? Through this course we explore issues such as identity, rebellion and the corrupting influence of power. These ideas are ageless and are presented in texts from Malorie Blackman’s Noughts and Crosses to Divergent. Are you ready to peel away the veneer of power controlling you?
English as a subject area focuses on the two key strands – making meaning and creating meaning. We focus on communication through a range of texts and mediums to reflect societal changes and 21st Century learning foci. English encompasses learning the language, using the language and thinking beyond the language through authentic learning contexts.
Specifically, this involves learners being willing to have their ideas challenged; to developing their own ideas and opinions through critical literacy and working on the skills required to be confident using their own personal voice.
We start the year by setting up the context of our theme and get stuck into our first text. We set up our personal reading focus and start looking at a related research assessment.
This term we finish our research assessment and engage in our second text.
We make connections between our texts this term and get ready for our derived grade exams.
Revise, revise, revise. This very short term is all about getting ready for our external assessments.
