NCEA L2 Wine Science and Practical

Course Description

Recommended Prior Learning

No prior learning is required but an interest in Wine Production would be beneficial.

Students who are interested in the production of grapes and viticulture will benefit from this course. They will be expected to participate in a vintage. Health and Safety aspects from hearing to manual handling, as well as general rural factors, will be covered. 

Students will also look at how NZ plant growers manage their plants to improve the growth, timing, or quality of their products. 



Course Overview

Semester A
Students will begin by looking at Rural Health and Safety with a focus on wineries and vineyards. They will also look at the environmental impacts grape growing has on the air, soil, and water. Quadbike and tractor safety will also be covered.

Semester B
Students will look at NZ plant production and how growers can change physical factors to improve plant growth. They will then look at management practices carried out on vineyards to produce a quality grape. Students will be expected to prune vines, and participate in other management practices.
They will also gain certificates in Growsafe, Hearing and Manual Handling.
