Teacher in Charge: Whaea D. Day.
Nau mai, haere mai - welcome!
Year 10 te reo Māori builds on basic knowledge gained in Year 9, covering grammar and vocabulary required for levels 1 to 4 of the Te Reo Māori curriculum. Students are given as many opportunities as possible to practice the skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking te reo Māori.
Students will learn conversational language as well as begin to unravel the formal language associated with whaikōrero, mihimihi and other speeches. Topics may include; the home, school, sports, and the marae. Cultural concepts and practices, tikanga and kawa, are inseparable from language and will be learnt along the language journey.
Whāinga - Goal
By the end of level 4, students can cope with a variety of routine situations when talking to speakers of te reo Māori. They can use familiar language with some flexibility and pick up some new language from its context. They can read and write simple notes and short letters and fill out simple forms. They can also use and respond to language, including directions and requests, that is likely to occur in familiar Māori settings. They are becoming more confident in using a range of language learning strategies.
