Course Description

Recommended Prior Learning

Students require a minimum of 10 Mathematics credits at NCEA L1 to enter any NCEA L2 Mathematics course. To ensure the best chance of success in this course students need to have achieved AS91027 (MCAT) and either AS91028 and AS91031 (preferably both). Students taking the business pathway require AS91027 (MCAT) and the endorsement of their NCEA level one teacher. Numbers may be limited therefore students are encouraged to do their very best at NCEA L1.

In order to achieve success at NCEA L2 (curriculum level 7) students need to be present for more than 85% of classes, actively engaged during every lesson and complete between two and three hours of independent study every week.


This NCEA L2 (curriculum level 7) Mathematics semester course covers;

Algebraic methods (external 4 credits, end-of-topic test, DGE term three, exam November).

Apply algebraic methods in solving problems involves: selecting and using methods, demonstrating knowledge of algebraic concepts and terms and communicating using appropriate representations.

Calculus methods (external 5 credits, end-of-topic test, DGE term three, exam November).

Apply calculus methods in solving problems involves: selecting and using methods, demonstrating knowledge of calculus concepts and terms and communicating using appropriate representations.

Systems of equations (internal 2 credits, one-period in-class assessment).

Apply systems of equations in solving problems involves: selecting and using methods, demonstrating knowledge of concepts and terms and communicating using appropriate representations.

Can be taken independently or combined with either MAC2A (calculus), MAT2A (business) or MAS2C (accelerated statistics and calculus) for a full-year endorsable course.

A textbook will be issued to the student for the year. It is the student's responsibility and must be returned in good condition at the end of the year.
