Course Description

Recommended Prior Learning

You need to have completed at least 14 credits in GEN201 in Year 11 to be eligible for this course. If you have a passion for the subject and were unable to take GEN1 last year owing to timetable clashes, please contact Mr. Townsend to have a chat.



This course is suited to students who have a general interest in Engineering or who wish to undertake engineering related occupations. 

Safe use and care for dimensional engineering equipment. Joining metals using welding. Trade calculations.

The course can lead you to engineering related occupations and tertiary engineering courses.

The majority of this course will be based around making a mini motorbike (the kit for this construction, you must buy).


Course Overview

Term 1
The year starts of with a refresher of Health and Safety of the workshop and a reminder of the technology values of pride, respect, involvement and responsibility. The importance of working a s a team and being courteous to one another is strongly encouraged throughout the year.

Key focus for this term is discussion on projects and the execution of those projects.
Projects can include machinist hammer, tabletop trebuchet, and motorbikes + other options depending on interest.

Two drawing assessments are introduced, these skills are used in the practical aspect of the subject for designing aspects of your project and also for improving on components or functionality of manufactured parts.

Practical lessons begin in week 3.

Term 2
Completion and evidence for first two drawing standards should be completed by the end of this term.

At this point, you will be part way into the practical projects with a strong focus on machining and milling using a range of metals and plastics. Marking out different profile materials is introduced and preparing these materials for welding. Although welding standards are not offered at this year level, you will be taught basic welding principles (mainly TIG welding) and are encouraged to have a go.

You will also be introduced to cutting internal and external threads, boring, facing, knurling, tapering and many more machining processes.

Term 3
Mathematics relating to engineering is a focus in Term 3 and incorporating the importance of numbers in trade. Your projects must be machined within a set tolerance and you will learn the importance of how 0.01mm can have an effect on a completed project.

Assembly is the focus for this term, with students completing initial projects. Assembly of projects will introduce you to a range of hand tools and power tools, fitting of components and joining using a range of processes. Problem-solving skills will be encouraged so that you are able to work through problems as they occur.

An optional project will be offered to you should you require a further challenge.

Term 4
Term 4 (4 weeks) is a focus on finishing of projects and book work for the year. All practical evidence required will be collated to prove competency.

There is a strong focus for you to achieve all the credits on offer. In addition, the aim is that you will be proud enough of what you have achieved in your practical work to want to take them home. For students who have completed building motorbikes this time will allow for any modifications or improvements.

This Level 2 course can lead to both the Level 3 or to an apprenticeship outside, allowing to to complete school.

Assessment Information Year 12 Engineering is a combination of both theory and practical assessment using Competenz unit standards. Competency is proven through the practical aspect of the subject.
