NCEA L1 General Engineering

GEN1
Course Description Recommended Prior Learning

This is an open entry course. However, having taken Engineering Workshop (EWS) in Yr10, would hold you in good stead to take this subject.

Suited to students who have a general interest in Engineering or who wish to undertake engineering related occupations.

The course is designed to cover 16 Credits for the National Certificate of Engineering (General Mechanical Level 2), undertaken by trainees within the engineering industry and by those undertaking engineering courses at Polytechnics.

Course Overview

Term 1
The course starts with an introduction to Health and Safety in the Workshop. This is actively added to throughout the year as new processes are introduced to the students. We also have a key focus on the Technology Department values being pride, involvement, respect and responsibility.

Term 1 begins with an introduction to the theoretical component to introduce ākonga to tools, equipment, terminology, and symbols used in the practical workshop space. Ākonga will complete theory work for 3 unit standards - 4433 Basic measuring devices, 22926 Workshop Health & Safety, 22923 Workshop skills, this work contributes to the 16 credits on offer.

Ākonga will enter the workshop and begin work on 3 introductory projects - Aluminium scriber (lathe project), Stainless steel bottle opener (handtools), Waka huia - Treasure box (pattern development, folding, riveting, and cutting). Engineering materials are introduced to the students and characteristics of materials explained along with the benefits and pitfalls of each material.

Term 2
For Term 2, ākonga will continue completion of smaller projects from term 1 and thn introduced to project 4 - Connect 4. This project is a little more self directed and expands on skills ākonga have acquired. This project will have design elements that will personalise this project, ākonga will desihn their own counters using design software and will 3-D print these using PLA plastic.

Evidence will be accumulated using photos, drawings and other relevent material and ākonga will create a portfolio through out the year that will be submitted to prove competency in the skills obtained and developed. The portfolio will used as evidence to assess ākonga on practical elements to achieve unit standards 4433 and 22923.

Engineering materials are introduced to the students and characteristics of materials explained along with the benefits and pitfalls of each material.

Term 3
Term 2 acts as a continuation of Term 2, with the focus being predominately practical. You will be introduced to further equipment in the workshop including Milling and Lathe work, tool selection and operation of the equipment and how to utilise the digital read outs of these machines.

At this stage, you will also be introduced to material finishes, with a focus on sanding and polishing.

Project 3 is introduced. You will have an opportunity to to utilize both the mill and lathes to manufacture a brass pneumatic piston. This is an independent project where you are encouraged to utilise the skills you have learnt over the past year. For this project, you will work in teams with a step by step plan to guide you.

Term 4
With only four weeks remaining, focus will be on finishing all projects and ensuring that practical evidence has been accumulated to prove competency on assessed standards.
