NCEA L3 English - Through Who's Eyes?

ENG3T
Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr A. van der Velden

Recommended Prior Learning

At least 10 Level 2 English credits.

Through Who's Eyes?

“There is no truth. There is only perception.” Gustave Flaubert argues that truth only exists through our own particular reality and experiences. This course will examine various authors and how they position and manipulate audiences to view reality from different points of view. Directors such as Spike Lee, Taika Waititi and Quentin Tarantino all present their texts through their unique perspectives. Will you be brave enough to peer through a different lens?

This full year course develops critical thinking and communication skills around a range of texts. Students will complete internal and external achievement assessments centred around these texts.  The course focuses on both providing students with the opportunity to gain NCEA Level 3 credits, but also further developing core language skills required at both university and in the workplace.  Students will be using auteur theory to critically evaluate sections of visual texts, make connections between texts, present a seminar, write in a variety of different genres, and utilise critical evaluation skills through an external essay.

Student choice is encouraged where practical, and part of the development of critical thinking skills is to enable students to connect their own world view with the material we engage in and with.
