For the Revolution: Exploring the Power of Ideas

Course Overview: This course is designed to empower students with the skills and knowledge necessary to critically engage with the concept of revolution through the exploration of various texts and contexts. Focusing on the theme of rebellion and the reasoning behind revolution, this Level 1 NCEA course integrates idea development, core language skills, and critical thinking. Students will analyze thought-provoking texts, including George Orwell's Animal Farm, and Kurt Vonnegut's Harrison Bergeron, to develop a deep understanding of the impact of revolution on societies and individuals.

We will also provide a modern 'lens' by looking at the rise of fringe ideology and how this can impact social structures.

Course Objectives: By the end of the course, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate an awareness and understanding of the concepts of rebellion and its implications.

2. Analyse and evaluate texts with a critical lens to make meaningful interpretations.

3. Develop effective writing skills for a range of different purposes and audiences such as report writing.

4. Apply critical thinking skills to analyse and synthesize complex ideas within our context.

5. Develop and enhance language skills including vocabulary expansion in order to express their ideas fluently and coherently.

This learning will be developed using the new NZQA Level 1 Achievement Standards.
