If you enjoy watching, playing, analysing or researching the history of sport, then this is the course for you. This course focuses on sports' place in our society, history and future. How has sport shaped or changed our society? How has it developed the culture of our communities?

This course explores key thinking and communication skills through texts based primarily around sports themes. We will be researching and summarising, making connections between and beyond different texts, writing creatively as well as developing our critical literacy skills.

English as a subject area focuses on the two key strands – making meaning and creating meaning. We focus on communication through a range of texts and mediums to reflect societal changes and 21st Century learning foci. English encompasses learning the language, using the language and thinking beyond the language through authentic learning contexts.

Specifically, this involves learners being willing to have their ideas challenged; to developing their own ideas and opinions through critical literacy and working on the skills required to be confident using their own personal voice.


Course Overview

Term 1
We start by looking at sports as a whole… what is the history behind sport? Obviously we will be reading and watching a range of texts to develop our genre and having fun debating our thinking. We will then explore the key ideas and concepts through a research inquiry on a topic of your choice that relates to our theme.

Term 2
This term we make connections. By looking at a range of visual and oral texts we can draw some conclusions on how language positions a reader to develop and understand key ideas.

Term 3
We will be developing our essay writing skills, utilising one of the visual texts we have already explored. Close viewing will be student-driven as you choose a film or trailer of your choice to close view.

Term 4
Revision, revision, revision! Like any good sporting fixture, we practice our core skills to ensure we are ready and confident about our external exams.
