Course Description

Recommended Prior Learning

This course is open entry. However, some level of experience or understanding about Art or Digital Technology would be an advantage. 

 


Level 2 DESIGN - DES2 is a full year course and is NCEA List A approved. 

It provides skills and understanding suitable for Level 2 Design and as a precursor for Level 3 Design. To endorse in Design, students must complete the 12-credit portfolio. 

Students will develop a wide range of skills in graphic art design. Digital art opportunities work alongside the traditional paper based artworks. 

There are 4 achievement standards; 3 INTERNALS and 1 EXTERNAL with a total of 24 credits available.

This is a course designed for students interested in developing Design skills in a visual format. Students will work to develop the ability to process ideas as a designer. Design thinking provides a structured process that helps innovators break free of counterproductive tendencies that thwart innovation. 

  • Freehand and digital drawing skills
  • Finishing tools including Adobe applications (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) 
  • Graphic design processes 
  • Basic photography
  • Research & Design Principles
  • Layout and composition
     Level 2 Design (2.2) - Design a front cover for your own magazine.

   2022 - Design folios in a student exhibition at the Millennium Gallery.

Course Overview

Term 1
All standards build the understanding needed for completion of the External submission - Level 2 DESIGN portfolio (12 credits).

These two standards will be completed late in Term 1 or early in Term 2.
A.S.91305 - 2.1 - Internal - 4 credits
A.S.91310 - 2.2 - Internal - 4 credits

Term 2
These two standards will be completed late in Term 1 or early in Term 2.
A.S.91305 - 2.1 - Internal - 4 credits
A.S.91310 - 2.2 - Internal - 4 credits

These two standards will start in Term 2 and run parallel with each other. They are both due for completion in Term 4, Week 2.
A.S.91315 - 2.3 - Internal - 4 credits
A.S.91320 - 2.4 - External - 12 credits

Term 3
These two standards continue. They are both due for completion in Term 4, Week 2.
A.S.91315 - 2.3 - Internal - 4 credits
A.S.91320 - 2.4 - External - 12 credits - This is a two-panel portfolio.

Term 4
These two standards are both due for completion in Term 4, Week 2.
A.S.91315 - 2.3 - Internal - 4 credits
A.S.91320 - 2.4 - External - 12 credits - This is a two-panel portfolio.

Semester A
Level 2 Design – 24 credits are available.
12 credits are available from 3 internal standards and 12 credits from the external portfolio.

2.3 - A.S.91315 - Internal - 4 credits
2.4 - A.S.91320 - External - 12 credits (Portfolio submission)

Successful completion of the 12 credit External portfolio enables course endorsement.

Design and Photography courses are complementary; they go well together. At levels 2 & 3 you may take more than one or two visual arts courses.
