Course Overview

Semester A
Farm Safety- this Unit Standard looks at Health and Safety from a rural perspective. It looks at the role of ACC and Worksafe, as well as the effects an injury can have on the worker, employer and their families. It requires students to use their own exerice in a rural setting to show their understanding of Health and Safety regulations in New Zealand.

Safe Operation of a Tractor- this Unit Standard looks at the legal requirements of tractors and how to use them safely. Students will learn about the hazards associated with tractor use and how they are minimised, isolated or eliminated.

Environmental Impacts of Primary Production- this Achievement Standard looks at the effects primary industries can have on the soil/land, water/seas, air and living organisms. Students will choose a primary industry and explain how that industry affects the environment. They will discuss the changes industries have made to improve their environmental impact as well as the negative effects that can occur with poor management.

Sow and monitor seeds require students to grow 4 different seeds in at least 2 different media. It requires students to sow and monitor the seeds until the seedlings have true leaves. Students are expected to provide photographic evidence and will link their learning to nurseries and how they operate.
