NCEA L2 Forestry B

Course Description

In this course you will learn the requirements for safe work practices as well as an outline of the forest industry in New Zealand. There are rules regarding working in forestry and you will become familiar with them and how forestry operates within these guidelines. Students will have trips to visit various aspects of forestry.

Chainsaws are a vital tool for foresters. You will learn how to use them safely and gain credits for operating it safely and correctly. 


Course Overview

Semester B
Students will gain knowledge and skills in taking the chainsaws apart, identifying the safety features and using appropriate safety gear. Students will learn a cold start and warm start, and progress to making upward, downward, compression and tension cuts.
They will learn a general overview of commercial forestry in New Zealand from clearing land, releasing the young seedlings, pruning and trimming through to harvest. They will look at the properties of hardwood and softwood trees and the different commercially grown species we have in New Zealand.
Those students who are working on US31656 will continue to record details of their safe work practices such as cold starts and warm starts as well as safe refuelling practices.

Recommended Prior Learning

Students wishing to complete the practical credit assessment for operating chainsaws will need to have completed US6916 from Semester A.  Students can complete US6916 instead of US6917 if they have not done Semester A.

Assessment Information

U.S. 31656 will be completed over the full-year course. Students who opt into one semester only may not be able to complete this assessment.
